Unique grains in the forest

The Kurumba tribe, known for their unique grains, has been collecting forest resources from Attappadi, Bhavani, Mannarkkad, and Forest Ranges. These resources include mulayari, katukaduk, chamayari, millet, ragi, corn, avara, sugar powder, kunthirikum, and more, which are made through the traditional method of tanatukyashi.
The Kurumba Scheduled Tribes Cooperation Group, which is exclusively for the Kurumba tribes, has recently ventured out of the forest to sell their products. In April of last year, they made their way to Kochi to participate in the EXO 2023 organized by the Cooperative Department at Ernakulam Marine Drive. This was the first time the group had set up a stall to sell their products, which included Silent Valley Honey, Mulayari, Kunthirikum, Ragi, and Mustard. The forest resources collected by the Kurumba tribe are sold through the State Scheduled Castes and Tribes Cooperative Federation.

This not only provides a source of income for the tribe but also helps to preserve their traditional way of life.
It is fascinating to see how the Kurumba tribe has been able to maintain their unique culture and traditions through their connection to the forest. By sharing their products with the wider community, they are also able to showcase the importance of preserving our natural resources and the knowledge of indigenous communities.
