The Primitive tribe, also known as the Kurumba, is a Scheduled tribe Adivasi (pattika vargam ) residing in Attapadi. They have a distinctive way of life, relying solely on forest resources and living in perfect harmony with nature. Unlike the Irula and Muduka tribes, who have frequent contact with civilization, the Kurumba rarely venture outside of the forest. Their livelihood is sustained by the forest and its resources. The majority of the Kurumba reside in 19 villages, including Anavai, Katukmanna, Tadikund, and Tuduki, located near Silent Valley in Attapadi. They generate income by selling forest products through the Kurumba Tribal Cooperative Society, which was established in 1975 and is only two years away from celebrating its Golden Jubilee. The cooperative society was established to assist the Kurumbars in collecting and selling forest products and medicinal plants. It was founded by the then tribal welfare officer and Uru chiefs, such as Muddamooppan, Marimooppan, and Pachamooppan.
The society has been instrumental in providing a source of income for the Kurumba and has helped to preserve their way of life. The Kurumba tribe is a unique and fascinating group that has managed to maintain a sustainable way of life by living in harmony with nature. The Kurumba Tribal Cooperative Society has played a crucial role in supporting their livelihood and preserving their culture. As we approach the society's Golden Jubilee, we celebrate their achievements and look forward to their continued success. It is truly inspiring to witness a community that has managed to thrive while preserving their traditions and values. The Kurumba tribe serves as a shining example of how we can coexist with nature and live sustainably. Their story is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of human beings. We must continue to support and learn from communities like the Kurumba, who have so much to teach us about living in harmony with our environment.
